Four killed, 52 injured as mini-bus falls into gorge

UDHAMPUR: Three students were among four killed and 52 others injured when a vehicle, they were travelling in, skidded off the road and rolled down into a deep gorge in Udhampur district on Thursday.
According to reports, an over loaded Ghordi-bound Matador (JK14C-0741) which was on its way to Udhampur, on reaching 3 km short of Barmeen, fell into a deep gorge, as driver of the vehicle lost control while negotiating a turn .
In the mishap, one teenager boy died on the spot who was identified as Susheel Kumar (16), son of Ashok Singh, resident of Barmeen while three critically injured succumbed to injuries at District Hospital Udhampur. They have been identified as Bishna Devi (45), wife of Badri Chand, resident of Sangroor, Priti Devi (17), daughter of Kansal Singh, resident of Sulger and Anil Sharma (15), son of Raj Kumar, resident of Ambar Lehard.

On receiving the information, a police party headed by Addl SP M.L Katih and DySP Arun Singh Jamwal rushed to the spot, evacuated the all injured and shifted them to District Hospital Udhampur. DC Udhampur Niraj Kumar also visited the hospital.
Police handed over the bodies to their family members after conducting autopsy and registered a case for investigation.
Minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat also visited District Hospital Udhampur and met those injured in the Barmeen accident.
The minister enquired about the treatment being provided to injured and directed the hospital authorities to provide best medicare to them for ensuring their early recovery.
He directed the district administration to provide immediate compensation to the kin of the deceased and also provide necessary relief to the injured in the accident.
Meanwhile, Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh have expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives in a mini-bus accident at Barmeen in Udhampur District.
In a condolence message the Governor has conveyed his sympathies to the members of the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls. He has wished speedy recovery to the persons injured in this accident.
Raj Bhavan Spokesman stated that the Governor has reiterated his regret and serious concern that the regulatory authorities; particularly the Traffic Police, have yet to take adequately deterring measures to ensure against operation of old and technically unfit vehicles, inadequately trained drivers, overloading of passenger carrying vehicles, over-speeding on narrow and poorly maintained roads etc.
The Chief Minister conveyed her sympathies to bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls. She has wished speedy recovery to the persons injured in the accident.
Deputy Chief Minister directed the district administration to provide every possible medical assistance to the injured. He also sympathized with the next of kin of the deceased and said that Government would provide every possible help to them.
