Srinagar: The bullet-ridden body of a former Sarpanch was recovered from an orchard in Pulwama district on Monday with police suspecting that militants shot him dead.
The body of Fayaz Ahmad Dar was found this morning in an orchard at the district’s Chewa Kalan area, a police officer said. This is the first civilian killing in south Kashmir since the Election Commission had on March 9 announced the schedule for by-polls to Anantnag and Srinagar Lok Sabha constituencies.
The Srinagar parliamentary constituency will go to polls on April 9 and polling in Anantnag will be held on April 12.
Pulwama district falls under the Anantnag constituency which was vacated by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti last year following her election to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice, Abdul Haq voiced deep pain and anguish over the killing of Ex-Sarpanch Fayaz Ahmad Dar at Kakapora, Pulwama.
In a statement issued today, Abdul Haq expressed deep grief over the killing and said that he is “deeply pained by the death of an innocent person.” He said the mindless killings of innocent people like that of Dar will benefit nobody and will lead us nowhere except to self-destruction.
Haq said he is aware of the pain the bereaved family must be going through after the loss of the head of their family. “My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and I pray to God to give strength to the family to bear this massive loss,” he said.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, Minister assured every possible support to them.
