SRINAGAR/JAMMU: At least five terrorists were killed after a major infiltration bid was foiled in Machil sector in the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of North Kashmir, while a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist from Pakistan was killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district on Monday.
Pakistan violated the ceasefire by firing at Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district while a jawan was injured on Monday in the Uri sector, an official said.
Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing towards an Indian post in the Uri sector, resulting in injuries to a jawan, an Army official said.
He said the injured soldier has been taken to the Army hospital here for treatment. Further details of the incident are awaited, he added.
“Five terrorists were killed today by the army in Machil sector of the LoC where a major infiltration attempt by terrorists has been foiled. “Five weapons have been recovered from the slain terrorists. The operation is still going on in the area,” Defence Ministry spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia said.
Around 40 terrorists trying to cross the Line of Control have been killed by security forces this year.
Last month, in the same area, another infiltration attempt was foiled by the security forces in which four terrorists were gunned down. The Indian Army has launched combing and search operation in Pulwama district’s Pinglena village, following a tip off about a presence of terrorists.
Since last seven months, the Army has foiled around 22 infiltration bids along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir, and 38 armed terrorists were eliminated in such operations.
The Machil gun battle is the latest in thea series of such exchanges with the government hardening its stand against militants after a recent spurt in violent street protests and attacks on security forces.
A Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Umer was killed in an overnight encounter in Pampore’s Sambora, police said on Monday. He belonged to the Abu Ismail group of the Pakistan-based outfit. “Role of Umer in different crimes committed by Abu Ismail group is being ascertained,” a police spokesperson said, adding the militant was killed in a joint operation with the army and Central Reserve Police Force.
The gunfight came a day after police confirmed Lashkar’s hand in an attack on a bus carrying Amarnath pilgrims. Eight people were killed when a group of militants fired on the bus on July 11.
The slain LeT terrorist identified as Umar was part of the Abu Ismail group of Kashmir, which is behind the July 10 attack on Amarnath pilgrims that left eight devotees dead and several others injured, a police official said.
The official said that security forces launched a cordon and search operation in village Samboora late last night following information about presence of terrorists there.
The search party of forces was fired upon by terrorist s triggering a gunbattle, the official said. One terrorist was killed in the encounter, he said.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani army violated the ceasefire by firing at Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district, an official said.
Pakistani forces violated the ceasefire in the Baba Khori belt of Nowshera sector, Deputy Commissioner of Rajouri Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said. According to reports, the Pakistani troopes resorted to shelling and firing in forward areas.
Pakistan violated the ceasefire by firing at Indian posts along the LoC in the Kalsia belt of Rajouri district on July 31.
On July 30, Pakistani forces had violated the ceasefire by firing from light weapons and medium machine guns in the Baba Khori belt of Nowshera sector.
