Finally, SAI opens training centre at Jammu

JAMMU: Finally, the Sports Training Centre (STC), shifted from district Udhampur, has been opened at sports hub of MA Stadium, here. The centre, which would be made fully functional in next couple of days, shall provide specialized coaching in the disciplines of basketball, handball and badminton.
The two disciplines of basketball and handball will fall under residential scheme of the SAI while the other discipline of badminton shall be included in day-boarding scheme.
“The two-day trails for these three events started today and a final list of those selected players shall be prepared after second round of ongoing trials tomorrow at MA Stadium,” informed Regional Director of the SAI, Sanjeev Sharma, who was on a two-day visit at Jammu to look into various arrangements made by the State Sports Council for the STC.
Earlier, the SAI had arrangements with the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at Udhampur but now the Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between SAI and the autonomous sports body of State Sports Council.
Giving more details, the SAI Director disclosed that in near future three more events of those popular games of wushu, table tennis and gymnastics shall be included in the SAI schemes at Jammu.
On a specific question, the visiting Director informed that SAI want to set up its own infrastructure in the state but could not do much due to article 370. “Still the SAI has made inroads into state’s sports by way of providing coaches and extending various schemes meant for specialized coaching and infrastructure building in partnership,” he mentioned.
