JAMMU: In a major development underscoring the fight against corruption in Jammu and Kashmir, the Anti-Corruption Court in Srinagar has convicted former Tehsildar Mohd Akram Khan in a long-pending bribery case dating back to 2010.
The judgment was delivered by Dr. Tasleem Arief Ganie, who found the accused guilty under Section 5(2) read with 5(1)(d) of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 161 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC). The court sentenced Khan to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.
According to the prosecution, Mohd Akram Khan, a resident of Aripal Tral in Pulwama district and presently residing in Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar, was serving as Tehsildar Chadoora at the time of the offence. He had allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 as a bribe from a complainant in exchange for settling a property dispute in the latter’s favour.
The case originated from a complaint filed on May 13, 2010, following which the Vigilance Organisation Kashmir (now the Anti-Corruption Bureau) laid a successful trap. Khan was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, leading to his immediate arrest.
After completing the investigation, the ACB filed a chargesheet on October 22, 2010. The case then proceeded through trial before culminating in the conviction pronounced today.
The ACB spokesperson said, “This conviction reflects the unwavering commitment of the Anti-Corruption Bureau to root out corruption from public offices. We urge citizens to come forward and report any instances of bribery or misconduct. The Bureau remains steadfast in ensuring transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.”
The spokesperson further emphasized that strict action will continue against public servants found indulging in corrupt practices, regardless of their position or influence.
