JAMMU: Over 2,000 families residing on the banks of river Chenab in the villages Gehar, Indri Bakoor and Dattyal in Khour Block are under threat of flood as government has failed to take protective measures by laying embankments.
Former DyCM Tara Chand who conducted two days tour of the three villages assured the public that he will take up the matter with the concerned departments to ensure that their houses are saved from the floods.
Hundreds of Kanals of fertile land has been eroded thus depriving the public of their livelihood, Tara pointed out.
Government has not given any compensation to such families, Tara said, appealing to release funds to compensate the families who have lost their fertile land.
Criticising the government for giving step motherly treatment to the residents of Khour block, Tara demanded that the cases for relief for those families whose crops have been damaged must be cleared at the earliest.
“During my tenure as DyCM, we cleared all the compensation cases on the spot,” Tara said adding “local residents will
come on roads to protest if
government delays the compensation.”
As the rainy reason has started and water level in Chenab River will rise, the government should immediately direct the concerned engineers to prepare the protection plan to save people, the former DyCM demanded.
