LEH: Accusing authorities of Kashmir University for playing with their career, students of EGM Degree College staged a protest against the delay in semester examinations.
Led by President Students Organisation of Unified Ladakh (SOUL), Tsewang Chosdon and President Ladakh Students’ Eco- Cultural Saver, Stanzin Thardot, the students assembled near Leh Gate and blocked traffic for about an hour.
While raising slogans, students said that they were forced to take to the streets as exams are not conducted since last year. They said that under this condition the students will compete their graduation in six years.
Giving ultimatum of one week, Tsewang Chosdon and Stanzin Thardot threatened to intensify agitation across the Leh District. They also highlighted shortage of faculty and lack of subject combinations.
Tsewang Chosdon informed that they had also met the Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Leh who assured to take up the matter with Kashmir University.
“We want our Chief Minister to wake up and intervene in the issue,” said Stanzin Thardot. He asked Ladakh’s politicians to wake up from slumber and take action.
Talking to STATE TIMES, Principal EGM Degree College Leh Prof G.S Rakwal confirmed that exams have not been held for the last one year in the college.
“Our session starts in March-April and the exams for first semester should have been held in August last year but it couldn’t happen due to turmoil in the Valley”, he said adding that in Kashmir it was held in November last year when situation improved but for Leh it was decided to be conducted in March 2017. Normally exams for 3rd Semester should be taking place now but unfortunately the first semester exams are not held yet,” the Principal said.
Referring to his meeting held with CEC, LAHDC, Leh Dr Sonam Dawa, soon after students staged protest, the Principal said CEC spoke to Vice Chancellor of the Kashmir University who assured for resolving the issue soon but no deadline was given.
It is learnt that Kashmir University is not conducting exams in Leh College on the excuse of closure of Leh-Srinagar Road as they are unable to transport stationery to Ladakh. It is unacceptable that Kashmir University cannot afford to airlift few question papers for one college to save the career of students.
