DYSS sanctions over Rs 18 lakh scholarships

JAMMU: After holding series of discussions with senior officers, Director General, Directorate of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) , Jahangir Mir on Friday sanctioned an amount of Rs 18, 64, 750 as scholarship in favour of the participants of the 61st National School Games, here.
Earlier, a committee was constituted for the purpose which included Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, Joint Directors, DYSS, Madan Lal and Bashir Ahmed as also Deputy Director (C) and Accounts Officer. The Committee examined the recommendations of the Joint Directors of Kashmir and Jammu and finalised the names.
Out of a total of 1,235 scholarship forms, 835 forms of the players, who participated in 61st National School Games, were received from the Joint Directors of Kashmir and Jammu.
A good number of around 400 applications for scholarships, including 12 medalists, were still awaited, a handout issued here on Friday informed.
“From Jammu Division, out of 534 application forms, 245 were received from Jammu, 83 from Udhampur, 57 from Poonch, 50 from Kathua and 41 from district Reasi as also other 32 from district Samba. Similarly, out of 301 applications received from Kashmir Division, 68, 48, 45, 29 and 23 were from the districts of Baramulla, Budgam, Srinagar, Ganderbal and Pulwama respectively. Districts of Kulgam, Shopian, Bandipora, Anantnag and Kupwara also forwarded a good number of scholarship forms,” informed the Director General.
After holding deliberations with the officers, the Director General approved a scholarship of Rs 10,000 each for gold medal, Rs 7,000 for silver and Rs 5, 000 for bronze besides Rs 1750 each for other participants.
He said the remaining cases will be examined separately after receipt of the relevant forms/recommendations from Joint Directors of the concerned districts.
The DG further said that during the year 2015, sportspersons of the State won around 90 medals, including 30 gold in team and individual events thereby kept State’s Flag high at the National scene.
State Kho-Kho meet postponed

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir Kho-Kho Association has postponed the upcoming State Championship due to prevailing inclement weather conditions and inability of the Kashmir based teams to report for the competition.
“The championship is now scheduled to be held from 28th to 30th March in district Samba. Earlier, the State championship was scheduled to be held from tomorrow,” informed Senior Vice President of the Association, B.S Tirthi.
