JAMMU: For next seven days rail traffic on the Jalandhar-Jammu-Udhampur-Katra route will remain affected due to ongoing interlocking work for double-laning of tracks.
The worst sufferers would be Mata Vaishno Devi bound pilgrims as most of the trains which have been cancelled or rescheduled.
Though Railway authorities have made elaborate arrangements to ensure majority of passengers especially visiting Jammu and Katra are disturbed but trains namely Swaraj Express, Malwa Express, Ahmedabad-Jammu Tawi Express,Happa Express, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Express and Jamnagar Express would be either running late by at least 4-5 hours or if need be would be rescheduled depending on the nature of the work on ground zero.
In addition, at least 19 trains have been cancelled by the Railway authorities between May 24-31 to ensure timely completion of double laning of the track betwen Jalandhar and Suchipind.
According to Railway authorities, on May 25 Allahabad-Jammu Tawi Special, on May 26 JammuTawi -Allahabad Special, on May 27 Bhavnagar-Jammu-Tawi Special,on May 28 Allahabad-Jammu Tawi Special, on May 29 Jammu Tawi Allahabad Special, on May 28,30 Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Delhi Junction Special, on May 29-31 Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Delhi Special, May 28-30 Anand Vihar-Udhampur Special May 29 Varanasi Jammu Tawi Special would remain suspended. Railway authorities have also changed routes of some of the trains for two days to expedite work of double laning of the track.
The double-laning work is being carried out to increase speed of trains, reduce congestion on the route and to overcome the shortage of tracks for multiple trains. Railway authorities said interlocking would help the railways set a panel of routes and circuit system of tracks.
They said almost 80 per cent of the work had been completed on the Jalandhar-Jammu route.
The doubling of tracks on two bridges, one over the Ravi another over the Beas, would be completed by March 2017.
