LEH: All Ladakh Transport Association (ALTA), a conglomeration of transport cooperative societies of Leh and Kargil, elected Dorje Angchuk as its Chairman at a general body of the association held here on Thursday.
Outgoing office bearers presented achievement cards and account details before the body was formally dissolved to form the new executives. The general body meeting nominated two representatives from each transport societies as its directors and the directors unanimously nominated Dorje Angchuk as Chairman who had earlier served as General Secretary. Transporters also nominated Tsewang Dorjey as Secretary and Stanzin Otsal as Treasurer while Mohammad Ali and Jamyang Dorjey were nominated as Vice Chairmen.
Dorje Angchuk said the conglomeration of transport cooperative societies of twin districts of Ladakh was formed two years ago to advocate and assert for the rights of the transporters of Ladakh at the State as well as at the Center levels as many rules and formalities, especially with the army, often become hurdles with the transporters of Ladakh.
“We are asserting that vintage of commercial vehicles engaged with the army should be more in Ladakh as compared to other places because for six months our vehicles here remained closed for the season and Ladakh is a moisture free place which saves vehicles from rusting unlike most places of the country,” he argued.
It is penitent to mention here that Dorje Angchuk, who is a political activist, is the current General Secretary of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Leh and former President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha Leh.
He had also served as the chairman of Ladakh Taxi Operators’ Cooperative Ltd Leh for two terms until last month and also served as General Secretary of Bus Operators’ Cooperative Ltd Leh for one term.
