Veteran film and TV director Ravi Chopra, best known for his film “Baghbaan” starring Amitabh Bachchan and TV series “Mahabharat”, died on Wednesday at the age of 68 following a lung ailment.

Chopra was admitted to Breach Candy hospital here as he was not keeping well for some time and passed away on Wednesday afternoon, family sources said. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Ravi came from an illustrious family of filmmakers, with his father B R Chopra and his uncle Yash Chopra.

Though his journey in cinema was not that smooth as that of his seniors, he still helmed movies like “Zameer”, “The Burning Train”, “Mazdoor”, “Dahleez” and “Baabul”.

His biggest success came from the TV adaptation of the Mahabharat, which continues to have a following even today. The series was directed by him and produced by his father.

He also produced “Bhoothnath” and “Bhoothnath Returns” with Bachchan playing the friendly ghost in both the movies. Bollywood celebrities took to Twitter to mourn the loss of the filmmaker.

“RIP Ravi Chopra! Shall always remember your ever-smiling face,” wrote actor-model Divya Dutta. Director Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted: “Saddened to hear about the demise of Ravi Chopraji. Apart from being a fine filmmaker, he was also a very nice human being. Rest in Peace, Sir.” Actor Tusshar Kapoor wrote, “RIP Mr Ravi Chopra. Deep condolences to the entire family and may his soul rest in peace!”(PTI)
