Dear Editor,
For the first time in recent history, Dipa Karmakar made millions of Indians glued to their television TV sets for an event other than cricket. She taught herself the Produnova vault in a backyard, practising on the seat of a scooter, and became one of the handful gymnasts who mastered it. It doesn’t matter if she got a medal or not. She represents the spirit of freedom that only the indomitable soul can achieve, clawing its way out of adversity and poverty and becoming a star in the constellation of achievers. This little star will inspire a struggling nation to dream.
