Democracy won
The much awaited outcome of Uttarakhand trust vote has reposed faith in the democratic system prevailing in the country with Congress clinching the victory thus bringing an end to the prevailing President’s rule. The Uttarakhand episode should open eyes of BJP leaders and allow the states ruled by other parties to continue. The outcome may help revive the dipping fortune of Congress in some of the states where elections are scheduled. The floor test has given the Chief Minister Harish Rawat the support of 33 lawmakers, two more than he needed for majority. With this verdict the President’s rule imposed on 27th March, from the state has been lifted. The Supreme Court ruled last week that Rawat, the deposed Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, must be given a chance to prove that he still has a majority in the state legislature. On the other hand in Kerala where Assembly elections are a week away (16th May ), Prime Minister faltered on emotions. Usually known for his high power public speaking skills, Modi’s speech ran into trouble when he compared Kerala to Somalia. First he drew fire from Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy who asked him to have some “political decency” and to withdraw his remarks. Now, the Prime Minister is drawing fire from angry people on social media. This is unbecoming of a Prime Minister and has created a great deal of agony. He spoke of a Kerala boy eating from a waste dump at Peravoor in Kannur District which is far from the truth prevailing on the ground. In Kerala, 25.02 lakh school students are provided with free midday meal, and egg on one day and milk on another day in a week Mr Prime Minister. He came to power promising Achae Din and crediting every Indian’s account with Rs 15 lakhs by seizing black money kept abroad. If he kept that promise he would not get an opportunity for comparison (though it shows his ignorance and illiteracy). With this utterances whatever prospects BJP had of opening a maiden account in Kerala, especially after the temple fire when Modi visited the state on the same day to express concern, now looks lost.
