Defunct SAC to be strengthened, accountability established: Hamid
STATE TIMES NEWS
JAMMU: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Hamid Choudhary on Wednesday said that it was during the regime of PDP way back in 2003 that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had established State Accountability Commission (SAC) with an objective to curb corruption in high offices but the successive governments rendered the anti-graft institution defunct.
The institution, he said was equivalent of the proposed Lokpal and brought even the Chief Minister of the state under its purview but the same institution was rendered dysfunctional. Now that PDP-led coalition is holding the reins of Jammu and Kashmir State, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has once again set rolling the process of appointing Chairperson and members of the Commission to make it a vibrant institution.
The constitution of Cabinet Sub-Committee to suggest names of retired Judges for the posts of Chairperson and Members of the Commission is a welcome step. Once the process is complete SAC will be strengthened and corrupt and inefficient nailed. This is a step aimed at infusing new lease of life in the defunct State Accountability Commission (SAC) by an able statesman.
The PDP leader hoped that Cabinet Sub-Committee will zero in on the right candidates as soon as possible so that this vital institution is made functional and its prime objective set forth in 2002 to nail corrupt is achieved. It was because of the efforts of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that SAC was established and it is he who is now again going to strengthen it in 2015.
The previous regime, he alleged deliberately didn’t allow the SAC to function for its convenience. This was the reason that public money was brazenly looted during past six years but since coalition is committed to give people a clean and transparent system of governance, strengthening of SAC is of vital importance towards which Mufti Mohammad has initiated his first step.
