DD anchor sacked for calling Chinese Prez Xi Jinping ‘Eleven’
NEW DELHI: In an embarrassing incident, Doordar-shan (DD) TV news anchor referred to Chinese President Xi Jinping as ‘Eleven’, evidently confusing the visiting foreign dignitary’s name with Roman numeral XI, eleven. The said anchor was sacked from the station for what was naturally a catastrophic mistake. The blooper occurred on Wednesday during a show on the channel.
It is known that getting a person’s name wrongly and not spelling a name correctly is journalism’s most humiliating mistake, and when it happens in reference to someone of Xi Jinping’s stature it is certainly not acceptable. As an official from the DD channel asserted the anchor’s mistake was “unpardonable”, showing her irresponsibility and also lack of preparation. The woman anchor has been barred from news reading for a few months.
