Cross border firing: 28,000 displaced from border areas, says J&K govt

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday said that around 28,000 people, affected by the cross border firing along the International Border in Jammu district, have been shifted to various temporary shelters in the state.

“Over 28,000 border residents of Jammu district who were affected by the cross border firing in the Jammu district have been shifted to temporary shelters in Jammu,” an official spokesman said.

These people belong to Arnia, Trewa, Nikowal, Zora farm, Suchetgarh, Adbullian, Chinore area, Pragwal, Garghal and Hamirpurkona of Jammu district.

The spokesman said that while 29 farm animals were killed, 85 others were injured in the cross border firing from the Pakistani side.

“Firing has also forced the affected villagers to move about 7,000 Livestock to safer places. Around 29 animals were killed and more than 85 were injured in Jammu district alone due to the cross border firing which started last week,” he said.

The official said that 13 teams from the animal husbandry department and four teams from the sheep husbandry department have been constituted to provide immediate veterinary care and treatment to the injured animals.

Besides the treatment of the injured livestock, the administration will also be providing fodder to the affected animals, he said.

“To provide immediate veterinary aid to the seriously injured cattle, six animals from Chinore farm and three from Hamirpurkona have been shifted to Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology, Jammu with the help of hydraulic cattle carrier vehicle,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the district administration in Kathua district today provided wheelchairs and other mobility aids to the differently-abled persons of border areas putting up in the safe shelters in the backdrop of border firing.

“The wheelchairs and mobility aids, including walking sticks and crutches, were provided to the needy persons at relief camps located in Hiranagar, Chhan Khatryan and Marheen for their hassle-free movement,” the spokesman said.
