SRINAGAR: Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar on Tuesday released Crime Gazette-2014 at a function held at Crime Headquarters here. The gazette is a first-hand information about the crime situation of the State and provides a vital data base for strategy building and designing crime containment initiatives.
Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said that investigation of special crimes is a major responsibility of Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch and the agency has to improve its working by adopting latest methods of investigation helping speedy disposal of crime cases. He said that criminals pose a great threat to the peaceful atmosphere as the crime is a basic cause of all evils. He said that the investigating agencies have to strengthen their mechanism and the civil society has also an important role in crime detection.
Rajendra appreciated the efforts of State Crime Branch, saying that the initiative would help different wings of Jammu and Kashmir Police to assess and evaluate their performance and concentrate on improvements in different fields of policing. He asked for dedicated efforts by the investigating officers for speedy disposal of the cases, ensuring conviction of accused on merit.
The gazette shows decreasing trend in crime scenario in the State during the year 2014 as compared to previous year. It reveals that 25,390 cases were registered under various heads of crime during the year as against 26,907 cases during 2013. It also shows decrease in the crime against women as 3,535 cases were registered during the year as against 3,714 during the corresponding previous year.
Earlier, the IGP Crime, Muneer Ahmed Khan threw light on the functioning of Crime Branch in the State and briefed the DGP about the achievements in the field of investigation by using latest methods.
The function was attended by ADsGP, S.K Mishra, S.P Vaid, S.M Sahai, Dilbag Singh and L Mohanti, IsGP, A.K Choudhary, S.J.M Geelani, A.G Mir and Jagjit Kumar, Dir. SSG, S.A Mujtaba, SSsP, Mubassir Latifi and Shahid Miraj, Dy SP Zahoor Ahmed and other police officers.
