Court awards Rs. 20,000 compensation to rape victim

JAMMU: Principal Sessions Judge Kishtwar Bala Jyoti on Saturday awarded Rs. 20,000 compensation under Victim Compensation Scheme to a rape victim (name not disclosed) for the offences under Sections 366 and 376 RPC under Section 3 Clause (3) and Sub Clause (4) of J and K Victim Compensation Scheme 2013.
According to case, the prosecutrix was raped by an accused Babu Ram. Consequently she became pregnant and delivered a baby boy. She approached Chairperson DLSA for compensation as she has been put to starvation and vagrancy.
Court after hearing prosecutrix and public prosecutor issued an order for rehabilitation of victim as it has become difficult for her to sustain without maintenance allowance or compensation.
Court further observed that prosecutrix is a rustic village girl belonging to economically depressed family who was allegedly kept by the accused person under false promise of marriage. As the mother and child are without maintenance allowance and their survival is difficult as such her case was recommended to Member Secretary Legal Aid for allotment of funds under the head of disbursement to the victim till disposal of charge sheet as it may take some time for conclusion of trial.
