Cong demands direct polls for electing Sarpanchs

JAMMU: Congress on Friday asked the PDP-BJP Government to hold direct elections of Sarpanchs instead of holding indirect elections in the State.
Addressing party workers’ meeting here, former Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand said that the Panchayat elections are meaningless unless the direct polls are held for the posts of Sarpanchs. He said that the Panchs don’t represent the whole Panchayat for they come from different segments as it’s the Sarpanchs who represent the whole Panchayat.
Tara Chand said that all the development, reservation of the weaker sections across the State and formation of administrative units was done by Congress adding that the BJP is trying to put everything in reverse gear and declared that the people will not tolerate it for long.
Former Minister, Mula Ram recalled the pace of development and recruitment in government services during Congress regime.
PCC General Secretary Balwan Singh explained the empowerment of the people through Panchayati Raj in the country and now the people of Jammu and Kashmir are debarred from that right.
Ashwani Sharma and Sadagar Singh Saini Presidents of Block Marh and Phalian Mandal respectively, Lala Devi Dass, Jagdish Raj Bhagat, Swarna Devi, Sardar Charanjeet Singh, Darshan Lal Motton, Dr Bansi Lal and Vikram Singh were also present.
