Cochlear implant surgery conducted at ASCOMS

JAMMU: The first ever cochlear implant surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Shalabh Sharma, Consultant, ENT Surgery at Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS), Sidhra, Jammu.
Dr Shalabh Sharma is Director of Cochlear Implant Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. The surgery is first of its kind performed in Jammu on a six year old child who was having a profound degree of hearing loss, delayed speech and language development.
The child was unable to have any significant benefits from hearing aid.
The main objective of the surgery was to provide better hearing capacity and appropriate speech and language development of the child.
The surgery was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Prof. & Head ENT Department, ASCOMS and assisted by Dr. Navneet Gupta from Audiology Section of ENT Department ASCOMS.
ASCOMS Hospital is planning to make Cochlear Implant Surgery Programme an ongoing process and will be conducting these surgeries on regular basis so as to provide maximum relief to hearing impaired children/adults for their proper hearing and speech growth and would help them to live a normal and happy life like any other normal person.
