JAMMU: Jammu doctor, who was part of the Climbathon 2014 and cleaning expedition to different peaks, has termed his association with the team of international mountaineers and instructors as a learning experience.

Dr Shyam Magotra, Clinical Tropical Medicine Consultant with Government Medical College (GMC), was assigned the task by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), the apex body of mountaineering in the country.
“The activity was a learning experience for me. As a team doctor of around 80 climbers and instructors from India, Iran, Nepal and Taiwan, the event was held under the leadership of Wing Commander, Sudhir Kutty,” Dr Shyam told on return to Jammu.
Part of the Climbathon, the clearing expeditions took place around Rothang Pass, Kunzum La and Chandertal areas adjoing Bara Sigri Glacier.
“Alpine training was imparted to all the 80 participants by dividing them in seven groups to climb as many peaks ranging from 20,000 to 24,000 feet. These climbers were also involved in three rescue operations on different peaks,” informed Dr Shyam.
It was after a long gap that this Jammu doctor took up the assignment from IMF. The last time Dr Shyam attended to such an activity was in 2009 when he was involved in rescue operations on Everest expedition, organised by Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. He was also part of the Everest High Altitude Marathon in the same year.
