SRINAGAR: The Chinar Corps celebrated 99th anniversary of its raising in Badami Bag cantonment today.
“The Chinar Corps was raised in Egypt at Post Said on 12 January 1916 under Lt Gen Sir Henry Home. The Corps gallantly fought the Battles during the World War I in 1916-1918. The Corps was re-raised on 20 March 1942 at Barrackpore and in 1947, 15 Corps moved to valley with 1 Sikh Infantry Battalion landing at Srinagar on 27 October 1947. Since raising, the gallant soldiers of 15 Corps have been conferred with 3641 individual awards and the units have been honoured with 461 theatre/ battle honour/ honour titles/ COAS unit citations/ GOC-in-C appreciation. The day was celebrated in true military tradition by remembering the heroes and martyrs of the Chinar Corps. Solemn and impressive ceremonies were organised in Badami Bagh Cantonment for the serving soldiers. Maj Gen Anil Chauhan, officiating GOC Chinar Corps paid obeisance to the martyrs by laying a wreath at the War Memorial in the Badami Bagh Cantonment,” a defence statement said.
“12th of January is celebrated as ’15 Corps, Raising Day’ to commemorate the sacrifices done by the brave soldiers of the Corps since its raising. The Officiating GOC, Chinar Corps while speaking on the occasion recounted the tremendous achievements of the Chinar Corps and the sacrifices made by the soldiers. He also said that, Chinar Corps is organising a series of initiatives for welfare of Awaam in the run up of 67th Army Day which is on 15th January 2015. Army Day related events are catering to every section of the society belonging to different parts of Valley and will be spread over entire month of January,” it added.
