PIL regarding damage caused by flash floods in Nikki Tawi area

JAMMU: In a Public Interest Litigation titled Inhabitants of villages Barjala and Khandwal (Nikki Tawi Area) V/s State of J&K & Ors wherein petitioners have highlighted havoc created by flash floods in Nikki Tawi area and maximum discharge of the flood water in Nikki Tawi area instead of Badi Tawi, a Division Bench of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court comprising Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Moksha Khajuria Kazmi after hearing Adv Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed and Adv Supriya Chouhan for the PIL whereas AAG Amit Gupta for the UT, directed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) to file a status report regarding work done so far in regard to river front within a period of one month.
When the PIL came-up for hearing, Adv S S Ahmed submitted that pursuant to the earlier orders, he was handed over two reports, one by Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) and another by Jammu Development Authority (JDA). The report of the JDA indicates that the Foreign Agency has started the study of morphology of River Tawi at Jammu which could not be earlier done on account of COVID restrictions and that the final report in that regard would be submitted by September 2022. Adv Ahmed further submitted that a new project ‘Tawi River Front’ has been initiated and its first phase is due to start. JDA has referred the entire project in this regard to ‘Jammu Smart City Limited’ and it is for the aforesaid Authority to initiate the development of the river front. DB asked Jammu Smart City Limited through its Chief Executive Officer to place on record a status report regarding work done so far in respect of river front within a month.
