The way the Bharatiya Janata Party seems to be backtracking on the issue of the abrogation of the divisive Article 370, during its campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election, has not gone down well with a large number of party supporters. It is impossible to forget Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s supreme sacrifice for the unity and integrity of our country. He laid down his life fighting for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
Abrogation of Article 370 forms the core of the BJP’s ideological base. This issue has always connected with people across the country. The BJP can compromise with the issue at the cost of its credibility. At a time when the Opposition has charged the party with taking U-turns on many issues, any lackadaisical approach on the ideological ground as well, will only weaken the roots of the BJP.
