JAMMU: Construction work of the ongoing flyover project between Bikram Chowk and Presentation Convent school crossing is set to miss another deadline and most likely it will be completed by May-end this year.
The project executing agencies and the State government had earlier set itself a deadline of March 2017 to throw open the flyover with an aim to decongest busy Bikram Chowk.
But now it appears the construction agencies are grappling with variety of issues and road blocks ahead of nearing milestone.
Ever since portion of the road link connecting fourth Tawi bridge was washed away in flash floods the construction work of the flyover was delayed and now the blanket ban on mining from the Tawi river bed is leading to long delays in organising construction material.
The construction agencies are currently outsourcing the construction material from nearby districts of Kathua, Samba and Udhampur. The same has led to cost escalation and causing hardships to the ground workers in keeping pace with the ongoing work.
According to official sources in ERA, “the flyover project expected to cost Rs 77 crores is running behind the schedule”. The senior engineer said, we had set a deadline of March 2017 previously but now it appears the construction work would be over by May-end. The beautification work of the flyover and landscaping and left over road construction work is also pending and expected to be completed soon. “Work on the sub-way near Kala Kendra and over head foot bridge is also pending”, official sources said.Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and senior ERA authorities have been regularly monitoring progress of developmental projects in and around Jammu and it is for this reason the ERA authorities are keen on completing the project in time before the shifting of the Durbar Move offices.
