Be honest
Dear Editor,
We used to write paragraphs and essays on “Honesty is the best policy” in school. But as we grew up, we discovered that honesty is not a matter of ‘policy’. It is a feature in one’s character and the behavioural response of an individual endowed with this trait, in any situation, could be easily predicted.
Guru Nanak says the same thing in his-oft quoted verse: “Truth is highest. But higher still is truthful living.” The roots of dishonesty, on the other hand, lie in one’s childhood, quality of education and the moral ambience in which one grows. That determines why one person considers a mere office pen on his pocket as “unauthorised property”.
