KARACHI: In a bold move, prominent Baloch representative Mir Yar Baloch has declared Balochistan’s independence from Pakistan, citing decades of state oppression, military violence, and human rights violations.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Mir Yar stated that the people of Balochistan have given their “national verdict” and urged the global community to stop remaining silent. “Baloch people across Pakistan-occupied Balochistan are up on streets and this is their national verdict that Balochistan Is Not Pakistan,” he wrote.
Mir Yar’s statement reflects deep grievances over years of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and aerial bombings allegedly carried out by the Pakistani state.
He emphasized that the Baloch have suffered uniquely compared to other ethnic groups in Pakistan, particularly Punjab, which he said has never faced such levels of state brutality. In a pointed message to India, he urged Indian media, YouTubers, and intellectuals not to refer to Balochs as “Pakistan’s own people,” asserting, “We are not Pakistani, we are Balochistani.” Source
In another major development, Mir Yar Baloch extended full support to India’s stance on Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). He called on the international community to press Pakistan to vacate the region, referencing the 1971 war and warning of potential military consequences. “Balochistan fully supports the India decision of asking Pakistan to vacate PoK… If Pakistan didn’t pay any heed, then only the greedy army generals of Pakistan must be held responsible for bloodshed,” he stated. He further called on the global community to recognize Balochistan’s independence and reject Pakistan’s historical narrative, which he claimed involved the forced annexation of Balochistan in 1948 with the help of foreign powers. “The world must not accept Pakistan’s narrative on Balochistan,” he declared.
The Balochistan region has long been at the center of a violent conflict between separatists and Pakistani security forces. International organizations have repeatedly flagged serious human rights abuses, including mass abductions, torture, and media suppression. Despite these reports, there has been little effective international intervention or pressure on Islamabad.
Mir Yar Baloch’s declaration marks a critical moment in the decades-long struggle for Baloch autonomy. While it remains unclear whether this declaration will gain official recognition, it has drawn renewed attention to the Baloch cause and is likely to increase pressure on international bodies to respond.
