parkash singh badalChandigarh:- Cutting across party lines, all Punjab MLAs accompanied Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today to meet Governor Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki requesting him to grant ascent to the new Bill on Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal passed by the Assembly for de-notification of land acquired for the canal.

The Governor listened to Badal and other leaders but did not make any commitment on ascent to the Bill, official sources said.

He assured them that he would look into the Bill indicating that the issue relates to the interests of other state also.

Solanki is also governor of Haryana.

Apart from Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, almost all the legislators of SAD, Congress, including Leader of Opposition in state assembly Charanjit Singh Channi, BJP and independents accompanied Badal to the Raj Bhawan.

The CM had led the delegation to the Governor seeking approval of the Bill, unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly on Monday.

Though no official comment was available but Channi said neither the Chief Minister nor any official was carrying the copy of the bill when the Governor asked for the document on which assent was to be given.

Channi told reporters later, “This shows the insincerity of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance towards an issue of utmost important for Punjab.”

No one from the ruling alliance was available for comments.

The festering row over sharing of the Ravi-Beas waters escalated yesterday with Punjab Assembly passing the bill against construction of contentious SYL canal, sparking an immediate adoption of a resolution by Haryana Assembly condemning the other state’s move as “unconstitutional”.
