Baba in perspective
Dear Editor,
The article shows the scheming character of our politicians, who would do anything to win votes. But that is what exactly Dr Ambedkar himself did, when he raised the issue of a separate electorate for the depressed classes and even after strong opposition from Gandhi had his way.
He also formed a new party to raise an alternative to the Congress to pursue his agenda under the garb of freeing the Dalits from the clutches of higher classes.
He contested elections from the Bombay presidency and won many seats. Being a son of an Army Subedar who was treated like any other soldier, he should have known better. Due to his merit, Ambedkar studied in England on the scholarship awarded by the ruler of Baroda without any discrimination against his caste. He found some wisdom, solace and equality in Buddhism during his visits to Sri Lanka and Nepal in the fifties, converted to Buddhism in October 1956 and died in December 1956. So, he has hardly lived the Buddhist.
Of course, he is a founder-member, but not the sole creator of our Constitution as is propagated due to a bias against the others. Our Constitution is basically a copy of other constitutions of the world, which anybody with education, experience and intellect could have done.
