JAMMU: A “medium danger” avalanche warning was on Friday issued for some districts of Jammu and Kashmir for the next 24 hours, advising people not to venture into avalanche-prone areas.
A “medium danger” warning exists for avalanche-prone areas of Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Kishtwar, Rajauri, Doda, Poonch and Riasi districts of Jammu and Kashmir for the next 24 hours, Snow and Avalanche Study Center said here on Friday.
It warned people against venturing into avalanche-prone areas. As per the center, Banihal Top got nine cm of fresh snow, Gulmarg 28 cm, Haddan Taj 35 cm, Neelam 47 cm, Pharkian 31 cm, Z Gali 28 cm, Kanzalwan 18 cm, Drass 2 cm, Dhundi 3 cm and Bahang 1 cm.
Meanwhile, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for vehicular traffic following snowfall at several places in Ramban and Udhampur districts.
“The highway was closed for vehicular traffic at 7 am following snowfall at various places en route,” a traffic police officer said.
“As a precautionary measure, no vehicle will be allowed to run on highway toward the Kashmir Valley from Nagrota check post,” he said.
Jawahr tunnel, Banihal and Patnitop areas along the highway and the hills of Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kishtwar and Ramban witnessed snowfall. Precipitation in Jammu has intensified the cold weather.
The traffic headquarters here had earlier issued “cut-off timing” for movement of vehicles on the national highway due to inclement weather conditions.
The cut-off timing for light motor vehicles from Srinagar to Jammu cut at Lavdora, Qazigund will be 8 am to 3 pm. For heavy vehicles – 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. For trucks carrying fruits, it will be from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Jammu to Srinagar cut-off timing for Nagrota would be 3:00 am to 2:00 pm for LMVs, 3:00 am to 1:00 pm for HOVs and 3:00 am to 2:00 pm for oil tankers.
The Udhampur cut off timing for LMVs will be 4:00 pm and for HOVs, it will be 3:00 pm.
In the wake of snowfall, Kashmir University has postponed all examinations scheduled to be held tomorrow and day after.
“All Kashmir University examinations, scheduled to be held on January 7 and 8, are postponed.
“Fresh dates for the deferred examinations shall be notified separately,” a spokesman of the university said.
He said class work for these two days shall also remain suspended in view of inclement weather conditions.
Due to inclement weather, the entrance test for selection of candidates for coaching of competitive examinations scheduled on 7th January, 2017 has also been postponed and now will be held on 12th January, 2017 at 12:00 PM.
The examination shall consist of 55 questions pertaining to quantitative aptitude, general knowledge, reasoning and English. List of registered participants and their examination roll numbers has been uploaded on college website (www. spcollege.co.in).
The participating students should carry valid identity proof along on the day of entrance test.
