Attempt to suicide decriminalised in 18 Indian states, 4 UTs
New Delhi: Eighteen Indian states and four Union Territories on Wednesday said they supported changes in the Indian Penal Code which seek to decriminalise an attempt to suicide.
The Law Commission of India, in its 210th report, has recommended that Section 309 (Attempt to Commit Suicide) of the IPC needs to be removed from the statute book. Since law and order is a state subject, views of the states and the UTs were requested on the recommendations of the Law Commission.
Keeping in view the responses from the states and the Union Territories, it was decided to delete Section 309 of the IPC from the Statute book.
The announcement was made by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary, in Parliament in a written reply to Vivek Gupta in Rajya Sabha.
