Army restores communication, ends Ladakh’s digital disconnect

LEH: The gallant soldiers of Leh based ‘Fire and Fury’ Corps rectified the Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) in the icy heights of Drass to restore connectivity to entire Ladakh region.
On 24th January, a series of avalanches and landslides had struck Zojila severing the BSNL OFC, affecting both civil and military communications. Accepting the challenges, a dedicated team comprising of Army Aviators, Army Signallers and Avalanche Panthers took on the hazardous task of restoring the communication connectivity to Ladakh region.
After meticulous planning and detailed reconnaissance, this team was inducted into Drass sector on 20th March 2017.
A hazardous operation involving number of helicopter sorties with snow and ice craft techniques, the first of its kind operation over nine days to lay 12 Km of Optical Fibre Cable over dangerous and treacherous terrain was undertaken, resulting in restoration of connectivity from Ladakh to Sonamarg on 29th March 2017.
