DEHRADUN: With flash floods having struck villages of Bastari and Urma of Pithoragarh district of Uttrakhand, the Army has intensified the rescue operation and saved five people and recovered ten bodies from the debris in the region.
The flash floods have ravaged 20 villages in the region and washed down seven houses in Bastari and Urma village, where maximum causalities have been reported so far.
The relief and rescue operation are going on round the clock, with NDRF personnel having joined the Army and ITBP, which is already deployed after June 30.
Top Army said that two  army men escaped death on June 30 night when the flash floods hit the region and a sentry post collapsed. The men along with their weapon were under the debris for some time. “Our troupes ran to the sentry post and took the two men out of the debris and the weapon from the spot.
The rain and bad weather had also damaged our communication infrastructure but it has been restored now,” said a senior Army officer posted in Pithoragarh district.
On July 1, when the condition worsened, the Army had established a relief centre at Shinghali village in proximity to the affected locations. On Sunday, the Army helped to take out one more body.
