THANAMANDI: Indian Army organised an awareness drive on sericulture at Youth Centre, Thanamandi on Thursday. The lecture was delivered by Amrit Lal (Field Assistant) representative of the Sericulture Department, Rajouri. The event was attended by youth and locals from Thanamandi and adjoining areas.

The aim of the lecture was to provide information about latest development and employment opportunities in the field of sericulture. The speaker brought out that  sericulture is an age old practice in the country and that we produce four types of natural     Silk – Mulberry, Tasar, Eri and  Muga. However, its production is limited to only a few pockets in the country which is further declining and is a cause of concern.  The climate and availability of skilled labour in this region favours silk production. He also explained that the farmers should indulge in it being in high demand.

The awareness drive was well received by the audience. The youth and the villagers thanked the army for conducting such awareness programmes which will not only enhance the employment opportunities but also bring about economical progress for the entire society.   The crowd found the lecture to be extremely informative and useful.
