JAMMU: Ace young, upcoming female sabre fencer from Jammu and Kashmir, Chavi Sharma, has brought laurels to the country by winning a bronze medal in the Sabre Girls Team Event at the Cadet and Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championship held in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The other three team members are Zaferlin from Tamil Nadu, S. Tanvi from Karnataka, and Tanishya Singh from Delhi. For the third-place match, the Indian girls’ sabre team won against Scotland with a score of 42-45. In the semi-finals, the team lost to Australia by a very close score of 43-45. Chavi Sharma, an international fencer from J&K, has also participated in the Asian Cadet and Junior Fencing Championship held in Manama, Bahrain, and the World Cadet and Junior Fencing Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In addition to her international achievements, she has won many medals in national-level fencing championships.
Currently, Chavi Sharma is training at the Montessori Fencing Club in Jammu under the expert coaching of Ujjwal Gupta, a former international fencer and gold medalist who is presently working as a PTI in the Department of Youth Services and Sports. Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, applauded the efforts of the fencers and their coaches for winning a medal for the country in the prestigious Cadet and Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2024.
She also congratulated the parents and coaches of Chavi on her excellent performance.
Former member of the J&K Sports Council and international qualified referee Rashid Ahmed Choudhary, Senior Coach Rachna Jamwal, and Shottu Lal Sharma also praised the performance of young fencer Chavi Sharma.
Sports lovers and the entire fencing fraternity congratulated Chavi for her outstanding performance in the championship.
