JAMMU: Department of Civil Engineering, Yogananda College of Engineering and Technology (YCET) held a lecture on ‘Educational Utilisation of Standards’ for the students of 6th Semester, Civil Engineering.
The speakers were Praveen Khanna, Director BIS Jammu and Milind Gupta, Scientist ‘B’, BIS New Delhi.
Rajnish Magotra, HoD Civil welcomed the guests and said that the event was organised with the belief that ‘Standards’ benefit everybody but their benefits often remain hidden.The event started with lighting of tradional lamp.
Praveen highlighted the various activities of BIS, including formulation of Indian Standards (ISs), Product Certification (ISI Mark), Hallmarking of Gold, Laboratory Testing etc.
He also threw light on the new areas for standardisation under consideration, such as Microfine Cement, GGBS etc.
He extended the talk by elaborating the modifications of standards, particularly in the field of Civil Engineering.
He went through National Building Code (NBC) and stressed for creating awareness among common masses regarding NBC for avoiding the incidents of building collapse, fire etc.
Milind Gupta also interacted with the students and acquainted them with various standards of NBC.
He also imparted knowledge to recognise genuine ‘ISI Mark’.
