Wushu National teams selection begins

JAMMU: Final selection trial for BRICS Games and selection trial for the 10th Asian Wushu Championship commenced at Indoor Hall Bhagwati Nagar, here on Friday.
Around 250 athletes from all affiliated units including those from Services, Army, Indian Air Force, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, BSF and Assam Rifles have reported for the two-day selection process, organised by the Wushu Association of India (WAI) in support with Wushu Association of J&K and J&K Sports Council.
Later, those shortlisted athletes shall undergo physical test, which shall be carried out on the University of Jammu (JU) campus, a handout issued here today informed.
Earlier, the General Secretary WAI, Vijay Saraf; Suhel Ahmed (CEO WAI) and Kuldeep Handoo (Dronacharya Awardee) declared the event open.
“Wushu Association of India has projected J&K as the main centre for National coaching camp in the forthcoming events, as J&K bestowed with high altitude nature, which is the pre requisite for this combat sports,” said WAI CEO speaking to the gathering.
In Taolu, more than eight events for both men and women took place today. Remaining events have been lined up for tomorrow from 9 am onwards at the same venue.
Prominent among those took part in the selection included Roshibina Devi (Arjuna Awardee), Pooja Kadian (World Champion) and eight other athletes, who have recently qualified for the World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia.
