World Environment Day: Speaker, Dy CM flag off awareness rally

JAMMU: Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh Monday flagged off an awareness rally to mark World Environment Day here in the winter capital.
The rally, comprising environmentalist and volunteers, took off from Mini Market, Trikuta Nagar and concluded at JDA Park, Railway Road Jammu.
MLC Vikram Randhawa, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) M Raju, Vice Chairman, Jammu Development Authority (JDA) Rajesh Kumar Shavan and Joint Commissioner (A), JMC, R.S Jamwal (KAS) were also present on the occasion.
Elaborating on the importance of World Environment Day, the Speaker said this day signifies the commitment to protect the environment and live in harmony with the nature. He said that coordinated efforts on part of government agencies and non-governmental organizations are keys to achieve the mission of Clean India envisioned by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
The Speaker asked JDA functionaries to ensure proper lighting of park at railway road and other public spots.
While addressing the gathering, the Deputy CM said that there is a need for spreading massive information and education to create awareness among the people at large about importance of personal hygiene and clean and green surroundings.
“The people of India have always believed in the umbilical relationship with nature and we regard her as Mother Nature,” the Deputy CM said, adding that indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources needs to be checked for the wellbeing of the human kind.
“When nature is in equilibrium, our lives and the world we live in will be in balance,” he stressed.
Later, Speaker, Deputy CM and the MLC planted saplings at the JDA Park Railway.
Meanwhile, the participants took a pledge to protect the environment.
Prizes were also distributed amongst the winners of wall painting competition at the function which was organised by Jammu Municipal Corporation. First, second and third prizes including mementoes, appreciation certificates and cash prizes of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively were also distributed to the winners of wall painting competition. First prize was given to Aman Kanathia of GGM Science College, second prize to Shubham Bali and Samanpreet Kour of SPMR College of Commerce and third prize to Mohinder Kumar of GGM Science College.
Under Swachh Jammu Public opinion poll first, second and third prizes were also distributed amongst the winners which was conducted by Jammu Municipal Corporation. First, second and third prizes including mementoes, appreciation certificates and cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7000 and Rs. 5000 respectively were also distributed to winners of Swachh Jammu Public Opinion Poll. First prize was given to Bansi Lal, Sanitary Supervisor JMC and its team of Ward No 30, second prize to Majid, Sanitary Supervisor and its team of Ward No 60 and third prize to Vijay Kumar, Sanitary Supervisor and its team of Ward No 14.
A Nukkad Naatak was also performed by the artists of a local theatre group to create awareness among the people about the importance of protecting environment.
Gandhi Global Family J&K celebrates World Environment Day with cadres and volunteers of the organisation.
State President of Gandhi Global Family, Padmashri S.P Varma recalled the saying of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion that ‘Nature has enough to meet the needs of all but very less to meet the greed of a few’. He enlightened that the celebration of World Environment Day has been a regular event since 1972 when first event was celebrated in Stockhom, Sweden. The purpose has been to spread a continuous awareness about the various environmental problems and adopting measures to protect environment.
In the end, he exhorted one and all to follow the principles of simple living as laid down by Mahatma Gandhi.
Aadarsh Bhartiya Samaj celebrated World Environment Day under the guidance of Col (Retd) R.K Sharma, Chairman and Daljeet Singh, President ABS to spread the message of awareness among the general masses about the environment.
The members displayed banners with slogans ‘Donate a tree, also plant a tree; save water and electricity for better tomorrow, save the environment, Save the Earth, etc. On the occasion Pt Chaman Lal Sharma donated fruit plants that were planted by ABS.
Ascend Telecom Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, J and K and Circle, celebrated World Environment Day in collaboration with Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar here.
The event was inaugurated with a signature campaign on theme ‘Say, No to Polythene’ by the staff of Ascend Telecom and Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar.
The drive was taken with full dynamism under the leadership of R.K Dhar, Regional Operating Officer, wherein about 30 employees of the company participated and highlighted sensitive issues of environment such as polythene are polluting land, water and air and steps suggested to save environment.
Medical Superintendent, Dr Madhuri Slathia and Dy Medical Superintendent, Dr Arun Sharma delivered a lecture on value of environment and highlighted the issues and threats which the earth is facing and the way forward.
The progrmme was concluded with the distribution of jute bag amongst the patients and attendants by Ascend Telecom.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Lords Inn Jammu conducted cleanliness drive at Shakti Nagar Canal Walkway and Akhnoor Road.
As a responsibility towards clean and green nature, employees of Lords Inn Jammu picked up brooms and dustpans and cleaned the walkway and the roadside.
Dinesh Sehji, General Manager of the Hotel said that Lords Hotels and Resorts is fully committed to such initiatives and will keep conducting many such events in the future.
Department of Environmental Sciences, GGM Science College organised various activities based on the theme of World Environment Day 2017. The day started with the, Nature Walk with the theme of ‘Connect with nature to protect the nature’ in the campus.
Later, a symposium on topic ‘Connecting People to Nature – A step Towards Environmental Protection’ was organised in the conference hall of the college. The event was presided over by the Chief Guest – Prof. Ashok Kumar and Guest of Honour – Prof. Karam Singh from the Department of Chemistry.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr Mosmi Raina, Head of the Department, Environmental Sciences and the event was judged by Prof Zenab Ara Khan, Prof Asiya Nisar and Prof Pallavi Balowria. Various students participated in the symposium, amongst them Ragini Manhas stood First, Varun Sharma got second position and third position was shared by Nittin Bakshi and Manik Gupta.
BSNL J&K Circle, along with J and K Telecom Women Welfare Organisation celebrated World Environment Day by planting 531 trees in different BSNL premises in all its units of Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Udhampur and Rajouri Telecom SSAs.
A function was organized at Circle Telecom Store Depot, Panj Peer, Talab Tillo, Jammu and 31 trees were planted in the premises in the presence of H.K Verma, Chief General Manager, BSNL, J and K telecom Circle. The event was also attended by Gayatri Verma, President Telecom Women Welfare Organisation along with other members of the organisation, senior officers of BSNL J&K Circle Office and other staff members.
CGMT BSNL Verma briefed the gathering and ensured that our responsibility doesn’t end with planting trees but watering, nourishing, pruning, guarding etc. is equally important to ensure their full growth.
World Environment Day was celebrated by army, in the high altitude environment of Ladakh all along Dras, Kargil and Batalik region. The theme for this year being ‘Connecting People to Nature’, the personnel of army focused on spreading awareness on the emerging environmental issues including global warming.
Keeping with the theme, a mass tree plantation drive, also incorporating the ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ was organised across the landscapes of the region. Soldiers and school children worked hand in hand and planted 4,300 saplings at various locations in Dras, Kargil, Batalik and Khumbathang, on the otherwise barren hill sides.
At Dras, a special water retaining compound, presented by NGO Eco Solutions, was added to the soil around the sapling pits. This would reduce the need for frequent watering and tree tending, as the compound retains 100 times more moisture than normal soil. Flower and tree saplings grown by the DRDO outfit, Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) were also used during the plantation drive.
The event culminated with a pledge, in which everyone present pledged to preserve the environment of the nation.
Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu in collaboration with Department of Posts, India (J&K Circle) and INTACH (J&K Chapter) organised series of events to mark World Environment Day 2017.
On the occasion, Prof R.D Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest. Sanjay Sharan, Chief Post Master General, Department of Posts (J and K Circle) and Dr C.M Seth, former Chairman, SPCB were the Guests of Honour.
The programme started with inauguration of the Philately Exhibition- a unique collection of stamps displayed by Department of Posts, by Prof R.D Sharma.
Prof Anil K. Raina, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, highlighted various initiatives and achievements of the department.
After welcome address, oral presentations were made by Pinki Manhas, Kulvinder Kaur, Karan Jamwal and Manisha Wazir, Research Scholars, Department of Environmental Sciences, JU on the theme Connecting People to Nature.
Sanjay Sharan, Chief Post Master General, J and K Circle also spoke on the occasion.
Later, Special cover on Environment and My Stamps prepared by Department of Posts, India (J&K Circle) were released by the Chief Guest.
S.M Sahni, Convener INTACH (J and K Chapter) highlighted the role of their organization in Conservation of Built/Natural Heritage Sites of J&K. At the end, he proposed formal Vote of thanks.

NHPC celebrated World Environment Day at its Regional Office Jammu. The programme started with planting of medicinal plants in and around office premises by S Kalgaonkar, Executive Director NHPC at Narwal here.
Anjali Kalgaonkar also planted saplings of medicinal plant (Neem) alongside Rail Head Complex, Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director appealed that nature loving people should plant at least five saplings during their lifetime. He further said that every one of us should present saplings to our near and dear ones on birthday, marriage anniversary for planting them at our homes and other religious places.
On the World Environment Day, BJP State Vice President Yudhvir Sethi initiated plantation drive at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park Digiana with a view to spread the message of importance of greenery.
During the drive, the members of Morning Walkers Association of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park Digiana planted saplings.
Among others who were present include Yugal Kishore Gupta President Morning Walkers Association Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park, Nariender Kuki and Saini.
To mark the World Environment Day, Ek Sath Rang Mandal presented Nukkad Natak ‘Dharti Bachao Paid Lagao’ under the ongoing Monday theatre series here at Ploura Link Road near Janipur.
Among those who performed in the play were Kanta Sharma, Nisha Jotshi, Raju Mad, Ashok Sharma, Mohit and Vijay Malla.
The Nukkad Natak was written and directed by Vijay Malla.
To celebrate the World Environment Day, a lecture by Prof. R.N Gohil, Fellow and Secretary, National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) Jammu Chapter on theme ‘Connecting nature to people’ was organised here in the Department of Botany, University of Jammu.
On the occasion, Prof A.K Koul, former Professor of the Department and Prof Geeta Sumbali, Dean, Life Sciences along with the faculty members of Life Sciences, research scholars and students graced the occasion.
Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Head, Department of Botany, University of Jammu also spoke on the occasion.

RAMBAN: The 45th World Environment Day was celebrated in various institutions across Ramban District on Monday. The main function in this regard was celebrated in the Government Degree College, Ramban.
On the occasion college students and faculty members were shown a documentary regarding the degrading the ill-effects of the degrading environment and the entailed warnings to the people across the world.
Ten college students including five girls besides Prof. Sanjay Singh Samyal, Prof.Shahjehan Ahmed Ganai spoke on the topic.
Later all the student speakers were felicitated by the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Yudhvir Singh.
SAMBA: In context of World Environment Day, one day training programme on biochar production and application in agriculture as climate change mitigation strategy was organised by SKUAST-J in one of the remotest villages namely Kathar, Mohargarh Panchayat in district Samba under guidance of Dr. J.P Sharma, Director Research of SKUAST-
J. The training was conducted under NABARD sponsored project “On-farm training and demonstration of biochar production for carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation in Kandi belt of Jammu” in order to create awareness about the value addition of farm waste and climate change mitigation through scientific interventions of using biochar in agricultural system.
Principal Investigator of the Project, Dr Peeyush Sharma, Er. N.K Gupta, Dr. Vikas Abrol and Puran Singh, Sarpanch also spoke on the occasion.
UDHAMPUR: Govt. College for Women Udhampur celebrated World Environment Day in the college premises. Dr. K.C Sharma renowned social worker and surgeon was the Chief Guest on this occasion and Principal Dr. Chander Shekhar presided over the function.
On this occasion, a Poster Making Competition was organized on theme of this year’s World Environment Day. Prof. Ravinder Kour, Prof. Kewal Kumar, Prof. B.P Singh acted as member of jury for evaluation of posters. Basaat Chowdhary, Raghunandika and Simran Gupta respectively were adjusted as first, second and third in this competition.
Dr. Anshu Gupta, faculty of Deptt. of Environmental Science also spoke on the occasion about the objective behind the theme of this year’s World Environment Day by presenting a power point presentation.
The formal vote of thanks was presented by Prof. B.P Singh. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Zubiksha Thakur.
To mark “World Environment Day”, the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) Udhampur organized a Legal Awareness camp at Bhartiya College of Education Udhampur.
District Mobile Magistrate Udhampur, Parveen Pandoh, along with Retainer lawyers, Yasmeen and Anoop Gupta attended the programme.

Kishtwar: Minister of State for Transport, PWD (R&B), Agricultural Production and YSS, Sunil Kumar Sharma chaired a programme on “World Environment day” organised by J&K State Pollution Control board Doda and Kishtwar in collaboration with “Shree Swastik Charitable Trust” and sponsored by “Green Alternatives” a social cultural & environmental organisation here today.
On the occasion, a symposium cum awareness programme on the topic “Pollution and waste free homes” was held in which a large number of students from different schools participated and expressed their views.
Dulhasti Power Station, Kishtwar organized many programmes on the occasion of World Environment Day.
P.K Langer, General Manager, Dulhasti Power Station planted saplings in the premises of the Project Library.
A total of 125 saplings have been planted in the various locations of the power station. Further a lecture session was organised on the various aspects and concerns of the environment in the training hall of Dulhasti Power Station.
General Manager, Dulhasti Power Station, emphasized the importance of clean and green environment for humanity and further stressed the need to plant trees by every responsible citizen.
On this occasion, Ratan Das, Manager (Geology), Dulhasti Power Station and Hukum Singh, Forest Range Officer, Kishtwar also delivered a lecture on the need of ‘Connecting people to Nature’.
To create awareness among the students about environment, a drawing competition was organised in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dulhasti Power Station, Government Higher Secondary School (Girls) and Government Higher Secondary School (Boys), Kishtwar.
Suresh Kumar, Chief Engineer (Elect) and other senior officials of NHPC were present on this occasion.
Underlining the need for collective efforts for protection of environment, MLA Akhnoor Rajiv Sharma said that conservation of forests and afforestation are equally important for saving environment and checking pollution control in the State.
Rajiv Sharma was addressing at a function, organized by Municipal Committee Akhnoor in connection with celebrations of World Environment Day here at Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Akhnoor today.
Asking students to involve practically in saving environment in their localities, Rajiv said that more important is to sensitize masses about steps need to be taken for protection of environment.
SDM Akhnoor Sunaina Sharma also spoke on the occasion and shed light on the subject.
