Workshop on political representation of women in J&K held

JAMMU: The Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL), University of Jammu, on Thursday organised a workshop on theme ‘Political Representation of Women in J&K’ in collaboration with Women’s Collective of Jammu and Kashmir.
The workshop was attended by students, research scholars and teachers of the University of Jammu, women Panch, Sarpanch and Municipal Corporators as well as social activists and members of civil society.
The introductory part of the workshop was started by Prof Kavita Suri, Director, DLL, who highlighted the key issues about the participation of women in politics and emphasized on the overall related issues.
Prof. Abha Chauhan from Department of Sociology highlighted some interesting points about the participation of women in politics. She said that participation of women in political institutions, political parties have been very less. She also highlighted the problems women face in entering politics and how these challenges can be faced.
Dr Shaveta Sharma from Department of Sociology talked about women representation in Panchayati Raj institutions.
Namrata Sharma, Corporator discussed the difficulties she faced while contesting elections, but she acted with great zeal while during her work.
Suresh Jamwal, who fought for MLA elections in 1996 and she also remained Mahila Morcha President in 1992, elaborated her discussion by saying that women has such will power that she can face the victory as well as the failure with positive spirit.
Prof Rita Jitendera, as chief guest of this workshop, emphasized on the role of women in the society and stressed that ‘one should die with shoes on’ furthermore, she shared her experiences of her life struggle.
