JAMMU: Mired in controversies, the Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu is yet again in news for usual wrong reason. Even as the hospital functioning has touched lowest depths, the interference in day to day working of different units by the Incharge Principal has not only demoralized the Heads of various Departments but also impacted the overall hospital working hugely.
Otherwise domain of the department concerned the roasters of doctors and para medics are now drawn by the Principal Dr Z A Gilani himself by ignoring and bypassing the accredited Heads of Departments. These roasters are generally glagged as ‘most urgent’.
“This is in contrast to established norms and against the guidelines of Medical Council of India”, said senior doctor, adding the Principal cannot jeopradise patient care by interfering in the working of various departments. “The functioning of various units is the domain of concerned Head of Department”, he added.
Dr Annil Mahajan , HoD Medicine, GMC, who is coordinator of MCI, has recently ignored all the orders issued by the incharge Principal Dr Z A Gilani.
Chest Dicsease (CD) and Cardiology departments have witnessed improvement in patient care and treatment under overall superintendence of Dr Rahul Mahajan and Dr Suhsil Sharma. However, interference in their working has impacted the patient care hugely. Dr Sushil has conducted over 10,000 procedures, giving relief to patients who otherwise had to go outside the state for heart treatment,” said Som Nath Dabgotra, an RTI activist.
“If the political interference will continue and incompetent doctors are given charge as Principal, the key departments like the CD, Neuro and Cardio, all super specialty departments, will witness closure, as the doctors manning these could move to private sector, Dabgotra said, adding, “If we see the history, very competent doctors like Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Amit Bhushan and many others had to quit their jobs to join private sector”.
Not only Health sector but all government departments are becoming tools in the hands of inefficient people, said former Minister Harsh Dev Singh, adding, “We must identify the doctors who are efficient and their expertise should be utilised to provide better services to the people of the state.”
Dr Z A Gillani, Incharge Principal GMC was appointed by the then Health Minister Lal Singh bypassing senior doctors for obvious reasons and till date Lal Singh’s interference in the premier institutions is allegedly continuing.
