Main conspirator behind Dhangri terror attack shot dead in PoK
Jammu: A terrorist wanted in India was shot dead by unidentified gunmen inside a mosque in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir on Friday, officials said.
Riyaz Ahmad alias Abu Qasim, affiliated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba, was one of the main conspirators behind the Dhangri terror attack on January 1.
Seven people died and 13 more were injured when terrorists struck Dhangri village of Rajouri district and opened indiscriminate fire. They also left behind an improvised explosive device that went off the following morning.
Originally hailing from the Jammu region, Ahmad exfiltrated across the border in 1999. He was considered as the brains behind the revival of terrorism in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, the officials said.

Incriminating materials were recovered from their possession, the spokesperson said.
The investigation revealed that both the accused persons are terrorist associates of an active terrorist Aqib Sher Gojri linked with proscribed terror outfit LeT, he said.
Preliminary investigation also revealed that arrested terrorist associates were in a conspiracy with Gojri to carry out terrorist attacks in Pulwama, the spokesperson added. A case vide FIR No. 239/2023 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station and further investigation has been taken up.
Meanwhile, Security forces have arrested a ‘hybrid’ terrorist and his associate in Budgam district and seized incriminating materials from their possession, police said on Friday.
The duo was apprehended in the Pakharpora area of the central Kashmir district, a police spokesperson said.
They were identified as Tanveer Ahmad Bhat and his associate Yawer Maqbool Ganai — both residents of Karapora Charar-Sharief.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the duo was operating under the banner of the proscribed terror outfit LeT/TRF in the Pakherpora area, the spokesman said.
Arms and ammunition, including a pistol, a magazine and nine rounds, and other incriminating materials were found in their possession, he said.
A case has been registered and further investigation has been taken up, the spokesman added.
‘Hybrid’ terrorists are those who are not listed as ultras but persons radicalised enough to carry out a terror strike and then slip back into their routine lives.
