Trikuta Club Jammu girls win exhibition volleyball match

JAMMU: To commemorate the National Sports Day as mark of respect to Hockey Wizard Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary, Volleyball Association of Jammu & Kashmir (VAJK) on Tuesday organised an exhibition volleyball match of girls at Play Field Shastri Nagar, here.
The match was played between Trikuta Club Jammu and Army Children Club Jammu which was won by Trikuta Volleyball Club in a keenly contested match by 2-1 (25-20, 21-25, 15-13) sets.
The match was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Rajeev Sharma, Member J&K Sports Council, who also distributed volleyballs to 12 players and urged them to come forward in fields of sports and education bringing the name of JKUT at national and international levels.
The Chief Guest also assured for all the assistance to needy and deserving outstanding players and asked the office bearers of VAJK to provide him their details.
Earlier, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) VAJK, Kuldeep Magotra welcomed the Chief Guest by presenting bouquet and apprised him the objective of function which was primarily aimed at celebration of National Sports week all across J&K UT by District Volleyball Associations with special emphasis to highlight the various initiatives taken by J&K Sports Council viz My Youth My Pride, Khelo India, drug de-addiction etc.
Speaking on the occasion, Vijay Kumar Magotra, General Secretary VAJK, recalled the contribution of Major Dhyan Chand in the field of Indian Hockey by securing three gold medals consecutively in Olympics in 1928 at Amsterdam, 1932 at Los Angeles and in 1936 at Berlin.
Magotra also disclosed on magnificent performances of Major Dhyan Chand, the Government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan and released a postal ticket in his memory later on.
His birthday is celebrated as Sports Day in India besides introducing the Major Dhyan Khel Ratna Award by the Government, he added.
Apart from this, the contribution of Neeraj Chopra, who created history by winning the gold medal beating Pakistan in the Javelin throw in the World Championship, and Bhawani Devi in introducing the fencing game in the international sports arena were also appreciated by all.
The birthday of Bhawani Devi, who remained 8 times Indian women fencer, is celebrated on 27th August as well, he added.
H.S Gill, Executive Vice President, R,C Sharma Treasurer, Mohd Tariq Joint Secretary, Subash Shastri, Veena Kumari, Manpreet Kaur, Seema Davi, Suresh Singh Executive Members of Volleyball Association of J&K, Balbinder Singh District Secretary Volleyball Association of Samba, volleyball lovers and players attended the function.
Mulk Raj Sharma and Naresh Kumar Volleyball coaches and Anil Kumar volleyball referee conducted proceedings of the programme.
Special programmes in this connection were also organized by Udhampur and Poonch Districts Volleyball Associations.
