Transporters strike halts life in Poonch District

POONCH : In complying with their call, the transport companies of all passenger vehicles observed a complete strike of bus service, mini bus service, matador service, Tata sumo, autos and other public transport vehicles since morning of Thursday which brought the life almost to a halt.
Due to non-availability of any public transport on road, the passengers, government employees, students of winter zone, businessmen who had to reach their shops from distance and other daily wagers suffered and the attendance in government offices, private establishments and the schools remained thin.
The transporters led by General Manager Bus Service Jagjeet Singh, held a strong protest at Bus Stand Poonch in support of their demands which include payment of Rs 1.61 lakh being the hire charges of 50 buses, delay in issuance of route permits, annual passing of vehicles, harassment by Transport Department on account of trivial matters and un-necessary formalities.
On the directions of District Development Commissioner (DDC) Poonch the SHO Poonch rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters. He told the protesters that DDC has desired to listen to their problem. Accordingly a deputation led by General Manager Jagjeet Singh called on the DDC and highlighted their demands.
The DDC assured the protesters that their payment of hire charges will be released after coming Eid and other minor matters will be solved. On the assurance of DDC the transporter called off their strike at 12:30 PM and all vehicles started plying on road.
