JAMMU: Communication and Capacity Development Unit of PHE, I and FC Department organised two days training programme for the department engineers on topic Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of rural water supply schemes and sanitation. The training is organized in association with the expert faculty of Engineering Staff College of India Hyderabad (ESCI).
The need for the training of technocrat’s on this topic is become essential for implementation of National Rural Drinking Water programme which has established as fact for the development of the Rural India.
The programme covers operation referring to timely and daily operation of the components of a water supply system such as headwork, treatment plant, machinery and equipment, conveying mains, service reservoirs and distribution system etc. effectively by various technical personnel, which is routine function and maintenance, defined as the art of keeping the structures, plants, machinery and equipment and other facilities in an optimum working order. It has been observed that lack of attention to the important aspect of O&M of water supply scheme leads to deterioration of the system necessitating premature replacement of many system components. As such, even after creating such assets by investing huge amounts they are unable to provide the desired services to the community as they either remain defunct or underutilised most of the time.
The valedictory function of the training programme was chaired by Dr Narinder Bhatial Executive Director CCDU, in presence of G.D Ohja, Rama Mohan, Director’s ESCI, Hyderabad and Mohinder Singh, Secretary Institute of Engineers, Jammu.
Others present on the occasion were Karamchetti and Y.S Lakshmi faculty from ESCI, Iqra Shafi HRD Consultant, Naginder Challu Accounts Officer, Vinod Toskhani and other staff of CCDU and Institute of Engineers along with PHE engineers.
