Temple ‘saviour’

Pakistan’s banned outfit Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) stating that they won’t allow to destroy Hindu temples or any other non-Islamic religious places in the country is something baffling. Religious tolerance as far as militant organisations are concerned is somewhat at low ebb. Playing on religious card and saying that it was Muslims responsibility to safeguard holy places of their Hindu brethren, Hafiz Saeed said while addressing a meeting in Matli town of Sindh Province on Monday. “We will not allow destruction of temples and other holy places of non-Muslims in the country,” he warned. The Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief rejected allegations that his organisation is promoting extremism in Thar area of Sindh, which borders India, by opening seminaries in the poverty-stricken arid region. Saeed also pledged support for Kashmiri Muslims. He said that RAW and other law enforcement agencies are trying to vanish the anti-state factors while the Nawaz Sharif government remains silent on it. The turnaround by JuD chief it looks come after India asserting pressure on China to declare LeT chief Mazood Azhar a ‘wanted one’. The case against Masood Azhar for proscription under the Taliban/al-Qaeda committee was so strong that the US, UK, and France had even decided to co-sponsor the request. According to procedure if none of the ten countries on the committee (Members of the Security Council) issued any objection, it would have gone through. In December 2014, India had also issued several letters both to the UN and to the Pakistani Government asking how LeT and JuD chief Hafiz Saeed, who is on the 1267 list, was able to fund massive rallies in Lahore and Karachi. On each occasion, say officials, China has placed a “technical hold” on the decisions, or intervened to ensure the proposals have not been taken up. It was in August last year Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed had pledged full support to the Kashmiris in their struggle for freedom and said he backed ‘Jihad’ in the troubled state in concert with Pakistani Government and the army. He also warned that the movement for attaining freedom will intensify in the coming days, forcing India to give up Kashmir.
