JAMMU: Rajesh Mukhi, who is preparing for Tawi Trekkers J&K’s expedition to Mount Everest in 2025, summited Island peak today along with his sherpa and has reached back Dingboche after safely negotiating a number of crevasses.
Island peak situated at an altitude of 6165m (20226ft) also called Imja Tse. The mountain situated in Sagarmatha National Park of the Himalaya of Eastern Nepal. “It was named Island peak in 1953 by members of the British Mount Everest Expedition because it appears as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche,” informed president Tawi Trekkers, Ram Khajuria.
Earlier, before undertaking the expedition to Island peak, Rajesh Mukhi who has the distinction of scaling Wilson peak, the highest peak in Antarctica, the frozen continent, in 2017, had an eight days trek from Lukla to the Everest Base Camp for acclimatization and familiarization of the area.
Meanwhile, Anukampa Sharma, another aspirant for Tawi Trekkers J&K’s
mountaineering expedition to Mount Everest in 2025, is leaving for Leh on June 30th to undertake a mountaineering expedition to Kang Yatse peak (6250m). She had undertaken a trek to the Everest Base Camp also in December 2022.
Pertinent to mention here that only those climbers of Tawi Trekkers who have successfully completed Advance course in mountaineering and scaled two peaks over 6000m and one peak over 7000m shall be considered for selection in the Mount Everest expedition which is estimated to cost about Rs.30 lakhs per participant.
“Accordingly, the intending participants of the Mount Everest expedition have been advised to prepare themselves on their own also by participating in mountaineering expeditions to standard peaks over 6000m. However, a mountaineering expedition to an over 7000 m high peak shall be organised by the club next year for the final selection of the team,” further said Khajuria.
