Dear Editor,
This refers to the recent incursions by the Chinese troops at Chumar and Demchok. The Chinese policy has not changed since Mao’s time, even as trade with India has increased. Blowing hot and cold, China’s policy is intended to keep the pot boiling while it reaps the economic benefits. India needs to have a long-term strategy to build a strong enough military presence to deter Chinese tactics. Only when Beijing realises that it cannot force a military solution on India, will it be ready to seriously negotiate a settlement of the border dispute.
