SSH GMC Jammu conducts successful open heart surgery on patient with Single Kidney

JAMMU: Cardiac Surgery Department at Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) GMC Jammu performed a rare feat of successful operation of a lady with defective heart valve and at the same time having a single kidney.
38 years old female patient suffering from Calcified Aortic Valve causing severe narrowing and leaking of valve leading to breathlessness on walking and heart failure.
She was also having thyroid disorder and was on medication for the same. She had only one kidney.Left kidney was not developed at all.

“Such patients pose great challenges to the Cardiac anaesthetist, Perfusionist and the surgical team “stated Dr Shyam Singh, Head of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, Government Super speciality hospital , Jammu.
“A delicate balance has to be maintained by titrating various drugs used by Cardiac Anaesthesia team so that Kidney function remains optimal” remarked Dr Puja Vimesh, Professor & Head Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology.
The Perfusionist, the man behind the Heart Lung machine maintaining the blood pressure of the body while the patient heart is made still for operation of Valve surgery plays a pivotal role as low pressure can compromise the kidney function. Perfusion team comprised of Charanjit Singh and Roshan Lal.
The surgical team has to work against time to complete the job of removing calcified valve and replacing it with artificial heart valve.
The patient was optimised in Cardiovascular & Thoracic surgery ward before taking her up for surgery on October 14, 2024.
The services of Nephrologist Dr Raju Bhandari were sought for putting patient on Aminoacid infusion for three days prior to Surgery to protect kidney function as Cardiopulmonary bypass itself can cause decrease in kidney function.
The surgical team consisted of Dr Shyam Singh, Dr Mohit Arora, Dr Vivek Gandotra, Dr Prabhdeep, Dr Rouf assisted by Dr Gourav Yadav (P.G) and Scrub Sisters Rigzen Angmo, Sonia Sharma & other staff under In charge OT Vishali and Sapna Manhas.
Cardiac Anaesthesiology team comprised of Dr Puja Vimesh, Dr Rasmeet Kour, Dr Vikas Gupta assisted by Dr. Sana & Dr Priya (senior residents), Dr. Param, Vikas Sharma senior technologist, Saleem, Arif, Kazim, Karan, Sheikh Rouf ,Tofeek and Tarun. Patient was extubated next day.
In Cardiac Intensive Care unit SSH, patient was monitored by highly trained Staff sisters and Cardiac anaesthesia technicians which included Sisters -Supervisor Tanjeet Kour, Tajinder Kour (incharge ICU, SSH), Sayeeda, Nayeem, Vandana, Shivani, Shivalika, Ekta, Nighat, Sonali, Sonakshi, Pooja, Urmila, Rajinder, Neetu and MTS Staff Ashish, Skeela, Kanika and Bharat. Principal Professor Dr Ashutosh Gupta lauded the efforts of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology to make such surgeries possible, and routine in SSH Jammu under Ayushman Bharat Scheme, for which patients donot have to pay from their pockets.
