KATRA: Being organised by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) for female employees, Annual Carom Tournament commenced at Shrine Board’s Sports Complex, Katra, here on Saturday.
On the inaugural day, four matches in the individual event and two matches in the double category were played.
Shikha Dhar defeated Sushma Devi, Sakshi outplayed Poonam, Sapna beat Usha Sharma, Sunita trounced Pooja and Veena downed Parshotama in the singles category.
Similarly, in the doubles category, the pair of Sakshi and Sushma blanked Shikha Dhar and Priya Khajuria while Pooja and Ekta with fine combination defeated pair of Sushma and Sunita.
Earlier, Chief Guest, Dr. M.K Kumar, Additional Chief Executive Officer SMVDSB, inaugurated the tournament, interacted with the players and wished them best of luck.
He said that observing the tremendous response from women participants of the Shrine Board in this tournament, more events would be organised to further encourage their participation in other sports. Ashok Kumar, Director Sports, SMVDSB as also Director of the Tournament said that with the creation of state of art sports facilities by the Shrine Board encouraging response is being received from local participants as well as from SMVDSB staff.
In this tournament a total of 15 players representing various wings of the Shrine Board are taking part.
