SKUAST-J conducts ‘Village Visit & Revisit’ programme

JAMMU: Scientists of SKUAST -Jammu under overall guidance and supervision of Prof J P Sharma Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu visited Marh block, village Akalpur of district Jammu under ‘Village Visit and Revisit’ programme. On the occasion, scientists interacted with farming community and listened to their various problems. Farmers of area expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof J P Sharma, who in a short span of six months had created a very strong linkage between farming community, University & allied departments. The programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr Rakesh Nanda, Head, Division of Agriculture Extension Education. The programme started with a brief introduction of entire scientists by Dr P S Slathia, Team Coordinator. He welcomed all farmers and discussed objectives and background of the programme.
Dr L M Gupta HOD, Agro forestry, advised farmers to grow aromatic and medicinal plants on waste land for better income and soil conservation. Dr Vishal Gupta, Associate Professor, Plant Pathology advised the farmers to adopt integrated pest modules for disease control. He emphasized to go for timely spray on wheat to control yellow rust. Dr Neetu Sharma Associate Professor, Agronomy advised to follow the cultural practices calendar for low weeds population in wheat. Dr Reena, Sr. Scientist, advised farmers to use Neem cake and other plant product for pest and insect control. Dr Vivak Manohar Arya, Soil Scientist, emphasized on the importance of soil testing and balanced fertilization. Dr Arya urged the farmers to use cover crop and residue incorporation for maintaining soil fertility.
Dr Akash Sharma Assistant Professor, Fruit Science advised the farmers to grow horticultural crops for better yield and profitability.
He stressed that high density orchards are having high potential for economic return. Dr. Raj Kumar was the facilitator for the programmee. Dr Vivak Manhoar Arya presented formal vote of thanks.
